The word that means whatever they want

"Hypoallergenic" sounds medical. It isn't. It's an unregulated marketing term with no legal or industry-standard definition — no certifying body, no required criteria, no test a room must pass. A hotel can call a room hypoallergenic because it swapped a feather pillow for a synthetic one, or because it did nothing and simply likes the word.

This isn't an accusation against hotels — many genuinely want to help allergic guests. It's that without a definition, the label carries no information. It tells you a hotel is aware allergies exist, not that it has done anything measurable. For someone making a booking decision, those are very different things.

What actually reduces allergens

The reassuring part is that the real measures are specific, evidence-based, and check-able. Allergy medicine is consistent about what works, and the primary culprit is the dust mite — a microscopic creature living in mattresses, pillows, and carpet, feeding on shed skin, whose waste proteins are a leading trigger for allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Humidity, first and most important. Dust mites don't drink; they absorb moisture from the air, so humidity is their life-support. The American Lung Association's guidance is to keep your home below 50 percent humidity, and Mayo Clinic likewise advises relative humidity no higher than 50 percent — with a comfortable 40–50% band being the practical target. A room kept dry is, in effect, continuous pest control.

Allergen-proof encasements — the best-evidenced single step. Zippered, tight-weave covers seal mites and their waste away from you. This is where the strongest clinical evidence sits: in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 60 allergic children, encasing mattresses and pillows produced a significant long-term reduction in dust-mite allergen and a meaningful decrease in the children's asthma-steroid dose — after a year, 73% of the encased group had cut their inhaled steroids by at least half, versus 24% in the placebo group. A separate controlled study found encasings roughly halved mattress allergen levels. One honest caveat the research insists on: encasings reliably reduce the allergen, but the improvement in symptoms varies between studies — so they're a strong measure, not a guarantee.

A dust mite is microscopic; its allergens are invisible proteins woven into fabric. Everything that determines whether you'll react is hidden beneath a surface that looks perfectly clean.

So the "hypoallergenic" label does something almost perverse: it attaches a reassuring word to the one quality of a room you're least able to verify yourself. You're asked to trust a claim exactly where you have no way to check it — which is where an unregulated term does the most damage. It's why allergen control is one of the fourteen things we assess: not because it's rare for a hotel to say a room is hypoallergenic, but because it's nearly impossible for a guest to confirm it.

What to ask before you book

Until "hypoallergenic" means something, replace the label with questions. A genuinely allergen-aware hotel can answer these; one using the word as decoration usually can't: Are the mattress and pillows in allergen-proof encasements? Is the room carpeted or hard-floored — and if carpeted, how often do you deep-clean? Is there HEPA filtration in the room? Is bedding washed on a hot cycle? Can the room's humidity be kept moderate, and is it well ventilated?

Specific answers mean the room is probably genuinely low-allergen. A vague "all our rooms are hypoallergenic" tells you what you need to know — that the word is doing the work the measures should be. None of this means hotels are dishonest. It means the word was never defined, so it can't be trusted alone. The measures that protect an allergic guest are real, specific, and verifiable — they're just invisible from a booking page and absent from a label. For the one guest in the room who can't simply "sleep anywhere," the gap between a room that says hypoallergenic and one that is comes down to a handful of things you'd never see, which is exactly why they're worth checking.
